Dutch Oven Orange Chicken

This is a tasty orange chicken main dish that is easy to make and full of flavor.



  • 4-8 Chicken Thighs with bones and skin
    • because they are cheaper
    • 2 thighs per scout
  • 2 Large Oranges
    • Cut into quarters (Do not peel)
  • 1 Large Yellow Onion
    • Peel off external tough layers
    • Cut into quarters
  • Small amount of oil
    • Used to keep the chicken from sticking to the Dutch oven
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Soy Sauce (2 table Spoons)
  • Ginger 1 Tbl Spoon
  • Garlic 1 Tbl Spoon or 1 clove
  • Basil 1 Tbl Spoon


  1. Prepare coals or fire
  2. Heat the Dutch oven
  3. Pour small amount of oil into heated Dutch oven
  4. Place chicken in Dutch oven
  5. Sprinkle soy sauce all over the chicken
    1. This way the spices will stick to the chicken
  6. Sprinkle on salt and pepper (be gentle)
  7. Sprinkle garlic, basil, and ginger on the chicken
  8. Place onion slices in between chicken
  9. Place oranges between chicken
  10. Place Dutch oven over 6-8 coals
  11. Place 6-8 additional coals on top of Dutch oven
  12. Cook until chicken is done (usually ½ hour)

Important Tip. You can tell when the chicken is done by using a meat thermometer. The center of the chicken should be at least 165o .

Rice, Beans, and Broccoli go well with this main dish.
